Buxus or boxwood has a long history and has been recognised for many centuries for its various architectural applications. The Romans used it a great deal and the plant remained extremely popular throughout the Middle Ages; a popularity which it has sustained up to the present day. For example, it features heavily in French formal geometrical gardens (Versailles). The Buxus plant’s most useful aspect is that it remains green throughout the year.
