The story behind color blocking

Color blocking is simply the combination of colours that are opposites on the colour palette. This creates interesting colour combinations that you do not often see. This trend originated from the works of Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan. He was known for his stark, geometric and colourful shapes, which he later called neoplasticism. Yves Saint Laurent was inspired by the work of Mondriaan and created the iconic dress with the name Mondriaan.

Color blocking was also the early introduction of Mod Style, a 1960s trend known for bold, even-coloured separations composed of blocks in different shades. It was believed that you looked more expensive and richer when dressed in an outfit of the same colour, making color blocking a way of contradicting this for the youth. Many people think of color blocking in terms of Pop Art, the art of Andy Warhol and the muse of Warhol, Edie Sedgwick.

The Decorum Gerbera

With passion Richard Mooijman runs his gerbera nursery where about 25 varieties grow and flower all year round. The best 20 varieties are available in Decorum. Laurens and Dirk-Jan Oudijk offer more than 50 different Germini varieties that they can deliver fresh every day under the Decorum label. Enough choice in colour and size to mix and match for your perfect color blocking vase. Because, if you say gerbera, you say colour! The basic colours of the gerbera are white, red, yellow, pink, purple, orange and green. The beautiful heart of this flower can be either black or green.

Care tips for the gerbera
